Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) – Informed Skills Group for Adults
• Are your emotions feeling out of control?
• Are you often impulsive when you are upset?
• Are you often feeling rejected or ashamed?
You are not alone – our DBT-informed Skills Group could help you!
This Skills Group meets weekly for 13 weeks and focuses on skill-building. The group is supportive and a good opportunity to share and learn from others. Exercises are provided for people to practice skills between sessions with the goal of introducing these skills and tools into participants’ lives so that they may use them when distressed.
There are four main skills taught in DBT. You will learn the following:
Emotion Regulation:
The ability to regulate uncontrollable and intense emotions by identifying obstacles and managing them as well as by learning tools to react less intensely to them.
Distress Tolerance:
The ability to tolerate distressing situations and emotions so you are less likely to become overwhelmed, avoid situations or fall into destructive and unhealthy emotional reactions.
Mindfulness:
The ability to live in the moment, without judgement, ruminating on the past or worrying about the future. Learning to accept yourself as well as your current emotional state without attempting to change it.
Interpersonal effectiveness:
The ability to assert and express yourself in relationships in a healthy way, while at the same time not damaging either the relationship or your self-respect.

This group runs on Tuesdays and STARTS on September 3rd, 2024. It runs for 13 weeks and ends on November 26th 2024. We meet weekly between 2:30-4:30pm and continue until 5pm on our last session.
DBT was originally developed in the late 1980’s by Dr. Marsha Linehan. Research has shown that DBT has led to improvements in emotion regulation, impulse and anger control, mood, trauma and anxiety struggles, as well as in a reduction of suicidal and self-injurious behaviors.
A comprehensive DBT program includes a weekly Skills Group session and regular individual therapy sessions, as well as access to a 24/7 phone coaching service outside of session and a DBT consultation team to support the clinicians offering this service. Our DBT-informed Skills Group is a stand-alone service which is offered to individuals who are expected to have individual therapy sessions weekly, either in the community or through our centre, while in the group for extra assistance with your own personal difficulties, urges and feelings.
Our client satisfaction ratings indicate that 90% of all clients rate our DBT-informed Skills Group as extremely helpful.
